Week 1: Anti-Choice Greatest Hits

Over 60,000 Minnesotans came to Planned Parenthood for health care this year alone. From family planning, to STI testing and treatment, to cancer screenings, Minnesotans understand and appreciate the important care Planned Parenthood provides. That’s why so many Minnesotans stepped forward and made generous donations to make our new flagship health care center in St. Paul possible.  This building is a testament to the support we have in the community.

Despite the fact that 95% of what Planned Parenthood does is preventive care, there’s just no pleasing some people. And by some people, I mean anti-choicers. As expected, they’re tossing around their normal buzzwords and hoping something sticks.  Let’s take a look at the top three anti-choice quotes this week.

Matt Lockett, Bound For Life.

"Planned Parenthood announced this week that they will be building their next 46,000 sq. ft. Abortion Supercenter in St. Paul, MN. What is an Abortion Supercenter you ask? That would refer to any abortion facility that's square footage exceeds 10,000. Think about most neighborhood-sized abortion facilities that are about the size of a single-family home. Brand new Supercenters are being built at a size that rivals your local Wal-Mart."

Jill Stanek:

“Environmentalists will be happy to learn PP is going green! Buildings used to kill babies to save the planet will be eco-friendly! PP of MN's new chop shop will be Leed-cerfitied..."

Scott Fischbach, MCCL:

"Planned Parenthood is all about money, and its new abortion center is being positioned to take in many more millions of taxpayer dollars for abortions," Fischbach said. "It is a tragedy to see Planned Parenthood driving up its revenues at the expense of innocent unborn children and their mothers."

So here’s the scoop: At 46,000 square feet this building will house our entire administrative headquarters, our community education programs, and a full service health care center. The new building will be LEED-certified, which means it will be good for the environment and as a non-profit it’s good for cost savings in the long run, allowing us to dedicate more resources to our patients. The vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s work is preventive. PP does more in one day to prevent the need for abortion than anti-choicers do in a lifetime. Minnesotans understand this and that’s why they’ve supported Planned Parenthood for the last 82 years and that’s precisely why Planned Parenthood will be here for the next 82 years and beyond.

Yep, Planned Parenthood will be located right along the central corridor and when the light rail is completed PP will be right there!

Wouldn't preventive care include adoption? PP's own report from '06 only shows 1 adoption referral for every 180 abortions.... seems a bit out of proportion to me!

Darren,
Preventitive care, from what I understand, does not include adoption. That is more of a pregnancy option, such as abortion and raising the baby.

And here's another thing to think about:
There are far more resources and organizations that will help mothers with adoption than there are that will help with abortion. And, proportionally speaking, only about 1% of Planned Parenthood funding goes to help those who have chosen abortion. The rest of it goes to advocacy, STI and cancer testing and screening, and education, along with other preventative care.

Actually Darren, preventative care is what Planned Parenthood dedicates a large percentage to. Preventative care includes both education and birth control. Adoption is a pregnancy OPTION and is discussed between a counselor and pregnant patient at each meeting.
