Why the Central Corridor?
Earlier this month, Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota announced that we would be building a new flagship health care center and administrative headquarters along the Central Corridor in the Midway area of St. Paul.
The Central Corridor is an 11 mile light rail track line that connects five major neighborhoods of the Twin Cities: Downtown Minneapolis, the U of M, the Midway area (our future home), the Capitol, and Downtown St. Paul. The new transit line will include 18 new stops and share five additional stops with the Hiawatha line and is slated to be completed by 2014. Creating this link between the two downtowns has been a long time coming, and PPMNS is so excited to be located just a block off the new line near the Raymond Avenue stop. Check out this concept video of an eastbound train on University Avenue. For some perspective, St. Paul landmark Porky's Diner appears on your right (at 28 seconds) and is about .7 mile east of our new new location.
Our new location was selected to improve access to our health care center based on a zip code analysis of our current patients. Additionally the new location is centrally located, improving access for the greater metro area. When selecting a new site, Planned Parenthood knew that we wanted to be located along the new Central Corridor light rail not only for improved accessibility, but because the Central Corridor light rail is an exciting new chapter in Twin Cities history.
Fourth Ward St. Paul City Council member Russ Stark explained in a recent Star Tribune article that our new building is a “great investment in the Central Corridor" and is the kind of development that the city is hoping for along the new light rail line.
Before we can construct the new building, the site needs to go through an environmental cleanup process. When we finish construction on our LEED-Certified health center and headquarters we will not only be cleaning up an environmentally degraded site, we will be adding to the vitality of the neighborhood.
